About Heather

Therapist, teacher, mom

I believe it’s possible for everyone to build a more satisfying future for themselves and their family – a future that produces less stress and conflict and that includes meaningful connections with others. Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and confusing, and sometimes we just feel really alone and unsupported with our problems. I work with clients as an active partner in therapy, using straightforward, goal-oriented, and research-supported techniques to help them build the kind of future they want to live. I talk more about my approach to therapy here.

I received my PhD from the University of Minnesota's Department of Family Social Science (couple & family therapy) and hold a full-time position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. My educational background also includes degrees in the humanities & music (BA),  library & information science (MLIS), and counseling psychology (MA). I'm licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist and Supervisor in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I'm also an AAMFT Supervisor.

As a researcher, I study family relationships and the use of technology in families - for example, how technology has helped family communication, where it has become a problem or a barrier, and how new technologies change family dynamics. If you're interested, my CV is available by request.

I'm married and have two boys. I purposefully create time to try new recipes in the kitchen, work out at the Y, and watch our dogs go crazy as they chase each other around the dog park.
